You might not immediately think of heavy metal and mariachi music as being two great things that go great together, but Metalachi makes the case for just that on Thursday night at the Backyard Bar Stage & Grill. Combining traditional mariachi instrumentation with over-the-top hard rock theatrics, their performance promises to be a night to remember. Plus, local rock heroes North of Navasota open the show.
Instrumental surf music gigs are a rarity in Central Texas, but that all changes on Saturday when multiple Texas surf bands, including King Pelican, Los SuperAvengers, and Nuclear Juarez—perform at Balcones Distilling’s Surf Fest: Summer of Rum. Get your beach vibe on with Balcones rum, tropical drinks, and food trucks from Austin and Waco.
If you missed the Deep in the Heart Film Festival last weekend—or didn’t see all the movies on your wishlist—fear not! Through July 30, stream many of this year’s films online. Your options include the documentary One Pint at a Time, which won multiple awards at this year’s festival, A Place Among the Dead, directed by and starring Juliet Landau (Drusilla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and a whole slew of innovative short films.
Other events of note:
Blue Houdini brings an eclectic mix of rock, blues, and funk to Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in downtown Waco on Saturday night.
On Tuesday, the Night Out for Safety block party at the 7th Street Pedestrian Plaza on Austin Avenue invites attendees to rethink what public safety looks like in Waco.
For Jackass fans, Steve-O’s The Bucket List Tour lands at the Hippodrome Theatre on Wednesday night.
Now Hear & Watch This!
“Sweet Child O’ Mind” by Metalachi
Metalachi has released three albums—Uno, Dos, and Tres—that include classic metal songs from Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Ozzy Osburne, and others. While the band’s mashup approach could easily devolve into comedy schtick, their adept musicianship and skillful song arrangements take the setlist on any given night to a new level. As unlikely as it might (initially) sound, fans of metal and mariachi music alike will find plenty to enjoy.

One Pint at a Time Trailer
Craft beer generates tens of billions of dollars annually for the US economy, but despite beer’s Egyptian and African heritage, these traditions have been mostly forgotten and are rarely found in American brewing culture. Today, Black-owned breweries make up less than 1% of the nearly 9,000 breweries in operation. One Pint at a Time examines Black brewers, brand owners, and influencers across the country who are reshaping America’s craft beer industry.
Stream One Pint at a Time and other Deep in the Heart Film Festival movies online.
