This Is Our Youth is the latest production from Silent House Theatre Company with performances at MCC’s Black Box Theatre this weekend. It takes place over the course of 24 hours as three young adults begin to take responsibility for their lives. The characters’ reckonings are not for the faint of heart, however, as they come with theft, overdoses, sex, and murder.
It’s no secret: We’re big fans of the ongoing series of Saturday night shows at Nexus Esports being taped for the Texas Music Cafe. This week’s edition, featuring Waco’s own Classie Ballou, may be the best yet. With a career that stretches over 65 years in Louisiana and Texas, don’t miss your chance to see this groundbreaking blues-zydeco-swamp rocker.
Next Tuesday night at One Day Waco brings another installment of the Waco-McLennan County Library’s Books & Brews. This month’s book is Deepa Anappara’s Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line, the story of children living in a slum in a fictional Indian city who set out to find a classmate who has disappeared.

“310’s Kitchen Brings the Gulf Coast to Elm Street”
Making a choice from 310’s Kitchen sandwich board menu is tough. Do you want thick slabs of brisket? Toothsome ribs? Seafood gumbo? Crab cakes? Angelica Mazé takes a long look at all your options as well as the man behind the food, Tony Berotte. (Plus, get his recipe for down-home migas!)

“This Is Our Youth: Silent House Won’t Play It Safe”
This Is Our Youth will challenge Waco audiences with its frank discussions of sex, drugs, and violence. “This is a stretch for Silent House,” admitted Bradyn Braziel, the theater group’s co-owner. “You’ve got some topics that Waco likes to stray away from, but we’re willing to step up to the plate and tell a story that needs to be told.”

“Classie’s Whip” by Classie Ballou
Classie Ballou played guitar on Boozoo Chavis' seminal zydeco hit “Paper in My Shoes” in 1954 and never looked back. With his own band, The Tempo Kings, he went on to record proto-swamp rock classics such as “Classie’s Whip,” “Swamp Mambo,” and “D-I-R-T-Y D-E-A-L.”
A long-time resident of Waco, his backing band now consists of a rotating cast of family members and friends. And on any given night, his setlist can range from Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti” to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”
