Isaac Sloane & The Sound Brigade, Heathers: The Musical, and Tony Berotte's Barbeque Guide
The Texas Music Cafe’s mission to bring you the music you need to hear continues on Saturday night with Isaac Sloane & The Sound Brigade. While local audiences may not be familiar with the Denton-based band that only formed in late 2021, the group has quickly made a name for itself with an eclectic mix of psychedelic, jazz-infused blues-rock. Featuring Sloane’s soulful vocals and dynamic instrumental jams, the Texas Music Cafe’s intimate studio setting promises to make this a night to remember.

The ’80s cult classic Heathers, starring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder, is the high school movie Mean Girls wishes it had been. Now reconceived as a musical, the two-act production features songs such as “Freeze Your Brain” and “Never Shut Up Again,” yet given its discussions of bullying, teen suicide, sexual assault, and school violence, it’s not for younger audiences.
As Bradyn Braziel, Silent House Theatre Co. co-founder, recently told Jonathan Kinder, “It fits our brand as a dark ‘pushing boundaries piece’ and is a well-known story that will test our audiences, who can expect a show with catchy music, stunning visuals, shocking twists, and relatable themes told and felt through the lens of ’80s teen angst.”
Heathers: The Musical has performances from Thursday through Sunday at Waco Civic Theatre.
As Texas troubadour Robert Earl Keen tells us, “Barbeque makes old ones feel young, barbeque makes everybody someone,” and the culinary art form is alive and well in Waco. But with so many options old and new to try, where to start? To answer that eternal question, Angelica Mazé went on a two-day barbeque crawl with local pitmaster Tony Berotte to get his insights on the best Waco has to offer.

(And if you head to Helberg Barbecue on Saturday, you can catch its collaboration with Tru Jamaica, whose brick-and-mortar location has been closed since a mid-December fire. Get plates of smoked jerk chicken cooked Helberg-style with fried plantains for $12, and 20% of all sales on Saturday—including merch—will be donated to the rebuilding effort.)
