The Waco Insider #38
Friends of the Waco-McLennan County Library Book Sale, The Roomsounds, and Waco Early Jazz Quartet
With the holidays coming up — or maybe you’re just a book hoarder — now’s a great time to attend the annual Friends of the Waco-McLennan County Library Book Sale. Over the course of four days, you can find all kinds of treasures at BASE at the Extraco Events Center. Plus, proceeds benefit local public libraries.
If you like live music, don’t miss The Roomsounds at Freight Bar on Friday night. This Texas band is a throwback to classic ‘70s rock and has drawn comparisons to The Rolling Stones with their big but no-frills style of rock and roll. Or, if you want something a little more low-key but equally compelling, check out the Waco Early Jazz Quartet at Brotherwell Brewing on Sunday.

“Helberg, Guess Family started out as food trucks; now among top 50 BBQ joints in Texas”
Great things are only possible by paying attention to humble beginnings, right? Michael Cantu discusses how Helberg Barbecue and Guess Family Barbecue first started out as local food trucks, graduated to brick-and-mortar locations, and recently made Texas Monthly’s list of the 50 best barbecue joints in Texas.

“Texas Over Time: The Washington Avenue Bridge at 120 Years, 1901-2021, Waco, Texas”
The Waco Suspension Bridge may be more famous, but as Geoff Hunt writes, the nearby Washington Avenue Bridge over the Brazos has a rich history too. For over a century, the bridge has joined East Waco to downtown, and he includes multiple photographs from its tenure as a vital lifeline for the city’s residents.

Sshhh! at the Hewitt Public Library: “Bradley Turner”
For the inaugural episode of the Hewitt Public Library’s new podcast, host Ryan Davis talks to MCC professor and local historian Bradley Turner. And while Halloween may have been last weekend, Turner has some spooky stories to share from his book Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Legends from the Heart of Texas.
