Mother's Day Brunches, Backyard Boutique Art Fair, and EXTC: Terry Chambers & Friends

Don’t treat Mother’s Day like some Hallmark ploy—it’s a full-throttle salute to the women who hold it all together. They changed diapers with one hand, packed lunches with the other, and somehow still had time to heal heartbreaks. So this Sunday, let’s raise a mimosa—or beverage of choice—and say thanks with a full plate and a proper toast.

Waco’s brunch scene is coming in hot as Hotel 1928 kicks things off early, followed closely by Pivovar and Lounge ’93 spinning out their mid-morning spreads. The BLVD Steakhouse and the AC Hotel each serve up white-tablecloth brunch from 10ish onward, if you’re feeling fancy.

But if your mom prefers her love language smoked and sauced, Helberg’s serving up BBQ and bubbles that’ll baptize your taste buds. Or head to The Will, where the Homegrown Sunday crawfish boil runs noon to 6 pm—because nothing says “I love you” like spicy mudbugs and live music under the open sky.

Terry Chambers, the original drummer of the ‘70s new wave band XTC, hits the Texas Music Cafe stage with EXTC this Friday night. But trust us: it’s no nostalgia cash-in—it’s a jolt of jangly, off-kilter adrenaline straight from the post-punk vaults. This is the kind of show that doesn’t happen in Waco—until it does. And then, the only thing to do is grab a ticket and let the art-pop oddity wash over you.

Texas Music Café is the one venue in town where a band like EXTC makes sense. The sound is clean, the lights stay low, and every chair faces the stage like the music is the star of the show—which it is. It’s Waco’s listening room for the beautifully offbeat and “how did this end up here?” moments that make you fall in love with live music all over again. Want proof that Waco can be weird in the best possible way? It’s happening Friday night.

Some things are worth leaving your digital doomscroll for, and the Backyard Boutique Art Fair is one of them. Going down Saturday on a bluff with a view and a vibe, it isn’t your average Etsy-in-the-park affair. It’s real-deal local: leather and ceramics, mixed media and candles, florals, and folks who care about what they make. Curated by Waco artist Wendy Michelle Davis, it’s a one-day explosion of texture, color, and small-batch genius. (And did we mention it’s free?)

But wait—there’s food. Real food. Homemade tacos, roasted cauliflower and chickpea kale salad, cucumber salad, cowboy caviar, watermelon fresca, chips and salsa—and a whole slew of desserts. And as if that’s not enough to make you believe in humanity again, there’s also music all day, from classical guitar to soulful indie to a little rock and roll.

No tickets. No pretense. Just good taste in every sense, from 11 am to 6 pm at 215 Arrowhead Point in Waco.
