Mayor's Summer Reading Kick-Off Challenge, ARTPrenticeship Community Paint Day, and Kids Skate Camp
School’s out, but the Waco-McLennan County Public Library’s got a plan to keep young minds moving: Sign your kid up for the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge and watch the books stack up.
The fun kicks off Saturday, May 31, with free books and a decorate-your-own tote bag activity at all four library branches. From June through July, every day of reading logged on the Beanstack app earns more chances to win, whether they’re reading books with a flashlight after bedtime or choosing an audiobook for a never-ending car trip.
Call it a street party with a pulse: On Saturday morning, Creative Waco’s ARTPrenticeship program is handing you a brush and saying, go ahead, help paint downtown Waco. The 7th Street Pedestrian Plaza turns into a technicolor collision of sidewalk chalk, games, face paint, and full-on creative chaos, where even your 4-year-old’s squiggle might end up immortalized in public art.
ARTPrenticeship is what happens when you give teenage artists real jobs, real mentors, and real walls, and trust them to make something that matters over the summer. It’s not just a mural; it’s civic engagement wrapped in scaffolding and paint, one brushstroke at a time.

Skate World Waco’s skate camp next week is where your kid stops doomscrolling and starts flying, on wheels, on purpose, with snacks. In five days they’ll go from flailing Bambi-on-ice to whipping around backward on one foot like they were born to boogie.
It’s like punk rock gym class with a side of glitter glue and mayhem. When Friday rolls around, they’ll have a graduation worth filming and probably a few bruises to remember it by.
